Mary Spooner

By Jim Nolt

"Twenty-five years! Doggone it, it sure don't seem that long. No siree." Those were my first thoughts when Carl asked me to write a profile for Mary (Anderson) Spooner. It's been 25 years since I first talked with Mary on the phone, and as I recall, that initial conversation was about a person dear to both of us -- George Reeves.

Through the last twenty to thirty years I've talked with many other people about George, but Mary is unique in several ways... one of which I can write about here. You see, she is the only person I know who went to the trouble of creating conversations between herself and George. She would carefully listen to audio tapes of Superman episodes and movies in which George appeared, then think of questions that could be answered with the bits of dialogue heard on those tapes. Finally she'd edit together her questions and his answers. Some of their conversations went on for a half hour or more! We had great fun chatting and probably thought we were the only ones who loved George as much as we did.

After twenty-five years, I don't remember anymore how we first connected, but I do know that it wasn't long before we were talking frequently and exchanging stories not only about George, but about so many others who appeared on the television series, the Adventures of Superman. One of our favorites was Robert Shayne. We both knew Bob personally. But because Mary is far prettier than I, and Bob a handsome rogue...they hit it off really well, and Mary was able to get far more information from him than I was. But that was all right with me. Mary was open and very willing to share. And to this day, she continues to share her interest in people from the early days of television... people such as Guy Williams, Clayton Moore, Robert Shayne, and our George Reeves. You can find Mary's stories and photos at http://www.celebhost.net/.

For this, it is our honor to include Mary Spooner into the George Reeves Hall of Fame.
